After letting our subscription lapse (which we understood to cover support and updates only), we lost ALL access to our vault — our own data, on our own on-premises server. M-Files' solution was to use 2014-era software with our perpetual license. The problem: every update over 12 years prompted us to upgrade the vault structure, warning that "some features may not work" if we declined. Now 2014 software can't read our upgraded vault. This appears to be by design. When we raised this with their Australian partner Storata, we were threatened with "equal and aggressive force" for considering negative reviews. > > We were loyal customers for 12 years. We purchased what we believed was a perpetual license — the certificate explicitly stated "License expires: Never." After deciding not to renew our annual subscription, we discovered our data was completely inaccessible. M-Files' position is that we can use our old perpetual license key with software from 2014 — but after 12 years of automatic updates that upgraded our vault structure, that software cannot read our current data. This is a catch-22 built into the system: automatic updates prompt vault upgrades, which makes old software incompatible, which forces ongoing subscriptions to access your own data.
