I love FileMaker, I have been using it for years. It is truly the epitome of what a database should do. Over the years they have made significant improvements and added many new features that I have yet to fully explore. But one thing I really like about FileMaker is that you can create a vast array of layouts (different data) from the same records without having to fiddle through sort features.

Nachteile

I do wish it was a bit more user friendly. The field/layout editor is just about the same as it was when I first started working with it over 20 years ago. Although that does make it consistent I do think it could be updated to be more intuitive.

It works, it does what it's supposed to do.

It can be difficult to use and the inferace isn't very user friendly.

There is a learning curve with file creation and customization. Once you get through your first round though. you realize how intuitive it can actually be.

Fairly simple to use. Relational database so that we can keep track of lots of different transactions and contacts etc. The best part is that there are many pre-canned solutions to get you started on using the product right away. Makes workflow simple, fast and easy. It is a very powerful database that can be used in so many ways yet doesn't take up much real estate on the computer. I worked on the DB Master platform for several years and it was so easy, this one is also easy to use once it is setup, but to set it up there are many steps. Once it is set up the sky is the limit for reporting, calculations and even using it as a POS system!

Nachteile

Must write scripts and lots of code to make it do what I needed it to do, so I ended up hiring a consultant to do the work for us. It was expensive but will pay off with a simpler workflow. Setting it up for your specific needs can be daunting and cumbersome. I would suggest taking a class, looking at training videos and also having a programming background to use it to its full potential.

Infinitely customizable, Filemaker is able to support your entire business if you desire. From CRM to manufacturing and inventory management right through to accounting. There are some off-the-shelf Filemaker solutions that can work alone or be the basis for further customizations.

Nachteile

Though it is highly configurable, Filemaker generally requires the help of a consultant or developer if you want it to reach its potential. This can be time consuming and expensive.

You need a server to run your applications, it all depends on the size and complexity of your project.

The software is incredibly customizable to the necessities of any company. Where I work, we're able to use it to track our department's wildly varying payroll for multiple unions, pay rates, and people.

There is a steep learning curve to Filemaker if you're creating your own database or formatting type. If you lack a general tech savvy sense or know how, online tutorials can be incredibly helpful, but to get the full usage of the system, you'll have to put in the time to really learn the ins and outs. There are also occasion bugs on the server version, as well.

It is a good dynamic program with cross-platform capabilities for beginner and novice users. It was not difficult to configure or modify and it was easy to search and extract specific records.

It is quite expensive software that has limited capabilities. I think it needs some improvements but nothing that has no solution.

When I write about cons, I would say this software seems to be little bit difficult for the new beginners because of its unique layout. For unlocked items, it is easy to override data but in case of locked data, they are unable to function in scripts. Another con is that it lacks a few of word processing capabilities.

The FileMaker platform allows us to build custom apps for our clients that are tailored to their needs. It can integrate with nearly any web service that has a Rest API. FileMaker has a fantastic community of developers that are willing to share and help each other.

Nachteile

The only downside is that it can be a little expensive for some smaller clients. But compared to other platforms, the power you get with FileMaker is a great value.

Can work with ipads and iphones for the people out in the field as will as back office computers.

Once you do one application then it turns into two then three and it never stops.

From a development standpoint, it couldn't be easier. Even users new to creating databases can be up and running very quickly.

Support can be very slow. While it's actually owned by Apple, the support does not live up to their normal standards.

We have been using Filemaker Pro for 13 years at our company. It has allowed us to grow and customize our database in ways that other software would limit us. The ability to create scripts and reports on the fly is great for gathering and presenting data.

Limited support options, although there are plenty of companies that offer support options. Be prepared to pay well for these though.

You can make a record look like pretty much anything in Filemaker. It's impressive just how customizable it can be, and you can see everything on one page, instead of needing to scroll threw throngs of data.

Nachteile

Filemaker looks like it was made in 1995 and never updated. It's incredibly intimidating and not user friendly to somebody coming on who is not familiar. It's also very easy to accidentally create very messy data.

Flexibility and speed to produce a desired change are the main benefits of FileMaker. It's easy to accomplish what you need, with simple scripting guidelines.

Nachteile

It's easy to fall in to less than ideal database design. You have to be careful about structuring tables and relationships, or inefficient calls will create huge slowdowns in a multi-user system.

There is not much that I don't like about the software, but occasionally, FileMaker will remove desired features within upgrades.

Cost is a bit much now with version 17 changes to licensing costs. However the software does a really great job and does what it was designed to do perfectly.

File maker is a different database solution. You can make structural changes on the database with zero downtime in production. It is incredible fast, even with a heavy load. It also allows to create user interfaces on the fly, which results in a full end-to-end information software.

Nachteile

The learning curve can be tough, specially for the mindset of the database construction.

Very powerful and versatile. Will do anything you program it to do. It's fairly easy to use, especially with simpler, flat file databases. If you need more complex or relational databases, it can handle those too with some learning of the application. FileMaker Pro can easily import and export data in various formats.

Nachteile

The application can be difficult to learn how to create relational databases. It takes some time playing around and experimenting with the various, provided database templates. Over the years, FileMaker Pro has changed the user interface, and IMHO, sometimes not for the better.

Vorteile

While mail mergers are handy, FileMaker templates are still the way to go! It can cut down multiple step processes to just one button click once you set it up the first time. You also don't have to re-enter data and risk inconsistencies. We've even used ours to set up automatic report exports we used to have to do manually every day. Such a time saver!

Nachteile

Like any software, there's a lot to learn here. But once you get the basics down you can set up some great layouts and scripts to make your life easier!

The storage and the automatic saving feature - whenever you type into FM, it is automatically saved without you having to click any additional buttons.

Buggy at very random times - it will load and revert back to the original copy instead of the most up to date. Does not happen often at all, but when it does it's a setback.

FileMaker is full of impactful features, including the ability to low code just about anything you need for your business. Integration into the current business process was as seamless as could be.

Honestly, there are very few cons with FileMaker. The interface is easy to navigate, it was easy to integrate, and it has a quick learning curve.

Ease of use. As a non-programmer, I was able to make cool applications for my personal and hobby use. Now as a developer it is my number one tool of choice for creating business automation software.

It has some aspects of interface which are unique to its brand, and usage of the web interface version is not quite up to par yet.

Licensing is a bit expensive for small companies with less than 5 users wanting to access their data with Filmaker client and Filemaker GO and Web DIrect. Buying Filemaker Licensing for teams (FLT licenses) means client has to now also invest in server hardware which is extra costs

FileMaker is a very versatile database application. Scripts are written in English and anyone can write them after some practice. Now you can even use JASON and Tableau APIs. You can easily set up a FileMaker server in AWS Most of the built in themes look good and professional; so even if you aren't a graphic designer your layouts can look good.

Nachteile

It does take a little time to get up and running. Having someone on staff who knows a thing or two (even the basics) about FileMaker will help. Once you grasp the concepts, though, there's almost no limit to what you can do.

I enjoy all of the options and how much you can customize it to your needs. Me and my team have built a system to control and input all of our work and it helps us track the the history of our products.

I experience some bugs here and there but nothing specific enough to call out. Small things such as the window changing sizes after macros are done.

It is so easy to use. I flunked out of programming classes in the 70's, but even I can put together fabulous functional databases!! I have used FileMaker in banking, retail, real estate & HVAC. It doesn't matter what industry, you can create databases that streamline the work process.

I suggest and purchase this software for our research teams that need a database to track projects, supplies, responsibilities and other facets of their research centers that do not warrant a sql database or the reporting issues that go with that. They can easily customize the interface, prioritizing what they think is most important.

It can get expensive when you are ramping it up for a growing department. Adding dozens of users and a FileMaker Server in a secure on-premise standup is a budgetary consideration for anyone, and therefore usually delayed until the monies become available.

There are pleasant people on forums that will help you, but it feels like such a disservice to have to use people outside of their customer service just to figure out bugs. If the database is already built by someone else well, it's easy to use, but building them is really tough.

Filemaker is a clunky, difficult to use, out of date database system. It's tough to get any real help outside of finding super nice people on forums.
